Order and Chaos in quilts

Nature around us constanly balances its elements.Balance and imbalance are incomplete without eachother. This course was exploring order and chaos and the balance imbalance in nature. We experimented with paper and fabric by overlapping forms and shapes. We made fractals and pop ups to see the effect of folds and pleats in books and cards. Our course explored how to extract order from chaos and how to create a chaos in an order.

The final project was to incorporate the concept of order and chaos in any form.My passion for classical dance and music was the concept I wished to portray through quilting.Bharat Natyam and Kathakali are the two dance forms which are quite similar to eachother in the context of the music and story line. The vibrant costumes, masks and ornaments, facial expressions and make up is quite different. The main idea behind choosing these two dance form was to emphasize on how a dancer and a musician coordinate. Thus,I chose to symbolize the dancer with multi coloured braids and the musician with ghungroos.
In Bharat Natyam,if the musician misses a beat, the dancer would have to overcome the broken sync while in Kathakali the musician overpowers the dancer.Hence, the balance is maintained and the dance is in syncronization.
