bent poplar, hemp | Ø 18” | 2015
This work originated from experimenting with vacuum bending poplar sheets, but the concept arose after striping the sheets with a band saw & fluting the strips with a vertical sander. Although adhesive was used aid in the assembly, each strip is held together with the natural pressure of the hemp.
Taking inspiration from the spiraling movement of a Moonflower, this tea tray reflects the continuously radiating energy of the sun. Alternating grain patterns in the strips create a spiraling force that passes from the angled center, out through the hemp & off the beveled tips.
