Daly St House
Fremantle
concept. The site is that this house sits on is shaded heavily by the existing various types of trees (e.g. gum tree, mango tree, lemon tree, etc) and the fact that the ground level of the site is considerable low compared to the neighbouring houses. Moreover, the neighbourhood consists of a variety of house styles from the vernacular Australian houses, the colonial houses, the modern project homes, to the triple storey Italian mansion house.
The initial concept design responds to these condition by introducing a modern, simplistic house that acts as a beacon to the somewhat dark site. A core of green wall in the middle of the house brings a magical quality of light into the house, this quality is also reflected to the translucent polycarbonate skin, especially during night-time when the green wall is artificially lit up from the courtyard that it surrounds. The metalframed green wall grows deciduous creeping vines that cools down the house during summer. It also provides tenants with a space for home-grown herbs near the kitchen, and allows flickers of lights into the surrounding rooms.
