During our 3-week-long travel and exploration of Northern Italy, we had the opportunity to experience first hand the rich cultural heritage of shoe design and shoemaking. The goal of the course was to practice techniques of shoe design as a product that exists midway between Apparel and Industrial Design. By visiting various museums, design firms, factories and trade-shows, including but not limited to Pininfarina, Kristina T, Dondup, FIAM, iGuzzini, Pitti Uomo and Karman, we got a glimpse of the entire process behind the ideation of a design, creative process and marketing that follows. Our journey culminated back at RISD, where we were prompted to design and create a prototype shoe inspired by our individual experience.
