Typography 2 - Bilingual Magazine Spread

The last project that we had for our Typography 2 class. The task was to design a Cover page, Contents page and 2 example spreads for a bilingual magazine.

The topic that I chose for my magazine was the music of Korea, with the 2 languages being English and Korean. The challenge here was to integrate the 2 languages into a cohesive format that wouldn't hinder or confuse the reader. Another challenge was to find the appropriate fonts for the 2 languages so that they would gel well with each other.

Because Korean text is more spacious overall as compared to English, the challenges involved trying to match the overall 'greyness' of the languages. The paragraphs were also misaligned to mimic the rhythm and movement of sound.

Overall, the project was enjoyable in the sense that it helped me understand and learn the nuances of kerning and leading as well as the tiny details of playing with type. As it was also the first proper assignment that I had that forced me to look at type critically, it was a learning experience in and of itself.
