Bay State Banner redesign

Bay State Banner redesign

The Bay State Banner is a Boston-based weekly newspaper targeted to the city's urban, African-American and minority communities. The Banner was founded in 1965 and celebrated 50 years in print in 2015.

As part of the anniversary, the newspaper was redesigned. The plan was to retain the overall feel of the newspaper that the community recognizes and has embraced for half a century, while updating the look, making it easier to read, solidifying consistent design elements and adding reader-friendly breakout information, call-outs, teasers and stings.

Headline and body fonts were changed, subheads and deckheads were employed, breathing room between stories and columns was added, page headers were made consistent and new page layouts for A1 and section fronts were implemented.
