Dressing the Screen D&AD

British Council 2014 D&AD Brief

About
For this University project I had to design a bilingual identity and design content for a Fashion Film event organised by the British Council that would be hosted in Russia and then tour around different countries.

The exhibition is called ‘Dressing the Screen’ and celebrates English and Russian fashion design and the film makers behind it. The identity had to be simple, beautiful and elegant. Therefore I created a sans-serif font to keep it modern and simple and the ‘S’ letters are curled more to emphasise elegance. The three ‘C’s represent a camera lens and shutter opening to emulate the movement of film and moving image from still photographs hence, ‘the rise of fashion film’.

I wanted my idea to portray movement and how fashion is changing all the time and also how clothes move on the screen. To show this I painted fashion illustrations as they are also a major step before any clothes or moving image are produced. The fashion illustrations are painted first just with water and then ink is dripped onto it. The ink follows only where the page is wet with water and ‘dresses’ a picture. The ink pouring down the page represents a person being dressed as well as the movement of film and the random spread of ink represents the constant change in fashion. This can be seen on the front cover of the catalogue as I filmed the painting process and created a film contact sheet again addressing the idea of ‘dressing the screen’.
