Past and Present: Philosophy Publication

Brief

The Royal Institute of Philosophy are planning to produce a publication to be distributed at the Past and Present lecture series event. The submitted proposals for the event must capture the spirit of ‘The Past and Present best lectures’ (transcripts of the lectures, additional content from non-attending contributors, biographies, quotes, etc.). It will be aimed at the people attending the event, but also to other key individuals and interested parties, and will therefore open up the market to a wider audience.

Solution

My publications cover holds tracing paper over the hard book cover as I wanted to play on the idea of time by layering the past and present separately whilst equally bringing them together as a whole. I kept with a tranquil colour scheme of blues, greens and greys throughout the book, which could appeal to all audiences whilst also giving a calm restful feeling. This colour scheme is most positively used as a navigation guide from the contents page to the required transcript. I combined philosophical quotes throughout the publication, which broke up each transcript to give the reader a break. I layered these quotes over watercolour spreads to continue with the tranquil theme. The quotes were perforated which enables the reader to tear the quotes out of the publication and pin them up as posters or as inspiration.
