Fables
I wanted some practice drawing animals, so I chose to illustrate fables for my calendar this year. The majority are from Aesop with a few classic chinese fables sprinkled in!
The Lost Horse (Chinese)
I love the moral behind this story—it teaches us that life is unpredictable, unknowable, and that seemingly unfortunate events can lead to happy consequences down the road.
The Fox and the Crane (Aesop)
I chose a bubble-gum pink color in the background, partly in homage to the wacky, drunken pink elephants scene in Disney's Dumbo.
The Lion and the Mouse (Aesop)
The Fox Borrows The Tiger's Prestige (Chinese)
I had a lot of fun drawing the monkeys (gibbons?) hiding in the trees. I don't usually use such garish colors, but I thought it worked well here and created a sort of tropical jungle vibe.
The Fox and the Grapes (Aesop)
The Milkmaid and Her Pail (Aesop)
Most of the story takes place in the milkmaid's head, so I decided to use bubbles to show her flights of fantasy.
