UX Research: Physical Product w/ Eye Tracking

Project Type: User Experience Research for Physical Product w/ Eye Tracking

Project Team: Justin Watts, Jason Perkowski

My Role: UX Research, All Technical Setup, SMI Eye Tracking Glasses Training/Data Collection, Notetaking, Analysis, Creation of Heat maps, Focus Maps, KPIs

Outcome: Client was given rich insights bolstered by eye tracking data for how to approach their redesign - staying true to longtime customers but reducing the amount of noise on the product.

Client & Context: Cleveland based lubricant and penetrant manufacturer desired to redesign the visuals on their can and wanted research with eye tracking and heat map, focus map and KPIs to aid them in their decision.

The Issue: A client asked our team to conduct research on how to iterate on the design of their products while still retaining the 'classic' look.

What I Did:

Technical setup involving SMI eye tracking glasses (ETG) all aspects of troubleshooting and training teammates to use the technology

Data collection and management of all in-person sessions including notetaking and ensuring all client needs were covered during the sessions and debriefing on the takeaways

Data analysis from all sessions including creation of eye tracking videos, heat maps, focus maps and key points of interest (KPI) using SMI BeGaze software

The Outcome: A robust report was written using the information I gathered and the outputs I made to help bolster findings and ensure the client understood the participants aggregated data
