Aphrodite of Cnidus
Isabelle McCormick | 2015 | Painting & Literary Arts
This painting is my interpretation of a famous sculpture from Classical Greece, Praxiteles' Aphrodite of Cnidus. The original sculpture has since been lost, but survives today through countless replicas and studies. From Botticelli to De Chirico, reiterations of Praxiteles' standing goddess have made it an icon in the art historical canon. Questions surrounding the nature of the goddess' gaze and hand gestures continue to intrigue artists and art historians. My piece zeros in on these two elements while using a visual language conditioned by the computer age.
Oil on canvas.
