My paintings consistently involve food as an autobiographical reference to the home atmosphere I grew up in, and also as an expression of culture. My mother ran a catering business out of our kitchen while I was growing up. My memories of home are greatly influenced by this, the kitchen as a place for preparation, presentation, curation in a way. In this piece, Meat Four Ways, I am curious of how a plate of food, a four course meal, reflects or summarizes a cultural identity. Growing up, having a mother who every night prepared traditional Italian meals makes me think about how food fosters and projects a sense of community or identity.
Oil on canvas.
