HERSHEYPARK

HERSHEYPARK is an exploration of the black body as a landscape. In my experience as black individual, expectations, routine in the form of stereotype, and deviations of the former are constant battles faced by people of color. The piece works to highlight these (mis)conceptions and works as a call to arms in order to dismantle them. Utilizing my own body, the piece utilizes scopophilia, percussive music, and rapid cuts and imagery to evoke a frenetic energy that requires the viewers' immediate attention. Highlighting black sexuality, oppression, and brutality, the piece is a collection of visual images that are often ignored and overlooked by the general population. Through compiling them together, the short video hopes to illicit a visceral reaction that promotes dialogue and introspection. It is a disruption of routine and a deviation from the expected.
