The Nature Lab
Christine Dreyer | 2018 | Illustration & Undeclared
This short animation depicts a Providence squirrel's encounter with our own RISD Nature Lab. I thought it would be novel to explore how an animal could perceive the Nature Lab, going "Off Course" from its usual life and discovering this bizarre collection of dead things, initially misinterpreting why and how humans would gather these apparently grotesque trophies. It is a shift in point of view which allows us to question some of our assumptions and reaffirm others. The medium in which I created the animation - charcoal drawn and erased on a single sheet of paper over time - develops a theme of reworking and re-imagining which reflects the questioning of "Of Course" presuppositions.
