“Providence Constellation” emphasizes how street maps erase the natural topography of an environment in depicting only what is accepted as useful for navigation. This erasure is uniquely relevant to a dual degree student, in that the Providence street map whites out the city’s hills, information that would be helpful in finding routes of least exertion.
Through the use of map tacks and thread, “Providence Constellation” also breaks from the idea of a street as its own entity, and shows it rather as a path through a constellation of points. This is furthered by a lack of labels, which makes each street a nameless line within the chaos of the Providence street system. The resulting ambiguity reflects the experience of a first year dual degree student moving to the city for the first time and having to navigate through what initially appears to be an orderless system.
