WOW! So You Want to be a Graphic Designer? appropriates the visual language and strategies of supermarket vernacular to highlight the cost of post-graduate tuition and its related expenses. Influenced by the aesthetics of grocery store posters and printed on newspaper to mimic advertising circulars, WOW! promotes higher education through the unlikely language of brash type and bright duotones. The absurdity of the price of an MFA degree is not only reflected in the design, but in the mocking language of the advertisements. But tuition is only part of it: the ads also promote an entire MFA lifestyle. From Muji pens and Fjallraven backpacks, and, of course—the Apple computer—this project calls attention to the brand-conscious attitude of those within the field. The most expensive brand, RISD, is revealed as one flips through the circular and its accompanying pamphlet, a not-so-subtle critique of the profit-driven business of college education.
