Curious Creatures of Lore

Curious Creatures of Lore is the outcome of final Graduation Project at NIFT, New Delhi. The aim was to study the depiction of animals in folk paintings in India. Eight different folk painting styles were studied for this - Madhubani Painting, Phad Painting, Kalmakari, Pithora Painting, Warli Painting, Kalighat Painting, Gond Painting, Pattachitra Painting.

The research findings were used to create design solutions to help bring about a better awareness of these paintings through the animal characters in them and the stories that revolve around them. There exists very rich symbolism in these depictions which can be used to convey complex messages in a simple manner.

The deliverables were in the form of a kit that contained an illustrated storybook, a tracing and coloring boo, flashcards, notepads and bookmarks.
