ROOK
A Computationally Designed Sculpture

Rook was a collaboration between Ed Andrews and my self. My rule was to design parametric tools to help design and ease the process of fabrication. Such sculptural form will not be possible without fully designing the form digitally and slicing it with parametric tools.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM

The form of the sculpture is fully designed by Ed Andrews. Once the form is designed, it will run through the first  script that will slice the form horizontally/radially, create the connection joints, flatten them and label them. Once the pieces are cut, flattened and labeled, they will run through a second script for patterning. The patterning tool will create cutting and engraving lines for the flattened pieces.
The entire patterning choices, number of sliced pieces and thickness have all been chosen by the leading artist once the parametric tools are designed in place.
Below is Script #1: the slicing script that slices the geometry horizontally, vertically, creates all of the connecting joints, flatten all the pieces and number them.
Below is Script #2: the patterning script that gives the option between three different parametric patterns and produce all of the engraving and cutting lines separately for fabrication purposes.
Full credit for all of the photographs, fabrication and assembly goes to Ed Andrews as I was not involved in that process.
