During my time at university we were tasked with working with Herman miller, a furniture design company. Our task was to work from the shell design below and rework it so that it would become aesthetically pleasing to home owners. My target market was similar to that of John Lewis customers but with the same customizability of the Ikea brand.
As the unit was made of metal, I decided to go down the route of adding veneers to the unit via magnetic overlays. These woulds come in a range of appearences such as different types of wood or a variety of colours that the customer could choose from. I also decided that I would rework the different size units into pre existing parts of the household such as the stool seen below.
Here I utilised light to enhance the appearence of the unit.
I also played around with the idea of glass which would take away from the pre-existing 'Office unit'  look of the design.
Finally I decided to think about combining two of the larger units side by side as seen below. This would allow the units to be used as a bookshelf. With the coloured glass and light installed, the unit becomes quite attractive and actually quite intriguing.
One of the final ideas I took forward was to replace the couch with two of the smaller units attached side by side and adding a number of attachments which allow it to be used as a couch. As you can see I have added on the neccessary cushions and sides.
I added two sets of hinges and glass doors to the unit so that it could be used as storage as well as for comfort. I later realised that this makes the unit appear fragile and that maybe two wooden doors would have been better. You can see here that the customer could pick and choose which additions they would want. I think the design looks quite modern with different coloured arm rests added on.
There is much room for customizability on the customers side with this idea, for example they could add more units to make a corner couch if it was desired.
