Choreographic Motion in Design
Visually Communicating Dance
In April 2011 at Endicott College I was assigned a Senior Thesis Project. Being a dancer and a designer, I found myself interested in the study of  systems of dance notation. These systems of dance notation translate human movements into symbols to further capture motion for future performances. I studied dance notation systems back to the 17th century, where I began questioning the idea of visually implied motion within. This idea sparked the final idea for Senior Thesis where I created my own dance notation system, Luskin Dance Language. The language I created was inspired directly from viewing a dancer in motion. Along with the set of prints below, I created a video portion. With the use of my video portion, the audience is given the chance to interact and learn the notation on their own. By using more than one dimension, the viewer is able to see and do the motion in front of them.
Luskin Dance Language is engaging to the viewer and allows for interactivity, which in my eyes is a learning tool necessary for many. I find the visual and performing arts to be mostly hands on, and to be able to have the opportunity to do and see something leaves a larger impression in one’s brain.
