Home for the Holidays!

The NYC Gay Men's Chorus hired me to do the art for thier 2014 Holiday show, Home for the Holidays. The chorus has about 300 members, and their big shows will have 200+ people performing.

New York City Gay Men’s Chorus (NYCGMC), has appeared at such world-class venues as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall and performed alongside a roster of stars – Liza Minnelli, Stephen Sondheim, Marilyn Horne, Barbara Cook, Victoria Clark, Liz Callaway, Carol Channing, Joel Grey and Eartha Kitt – to name only a few.

Recently they had the honor of singing at Joan Rivers funeral, at the request of the family. Joan had been a long time supporter of the Chorus.

This years show was based around the idea of an old fashioned musical, with a story.

Besides creating the promotional image, I also created all the various ads and images that would be used on sites across the web. This meant having to come up with an image that could be reworked from a vertical to horizontal, and accomidate text where needed.
For Facebook, The banner had to work both online and from mobile devices. I created two, one that allowed people to let their friends know they were in the show, and one to just promote the show.

I also made profile avatars of the characters in the poster.
Below are the thumbnails and pencils. The roll of Mrs Claus was being played by drag queen, Tipsy von Tart. A mix of Donna Reed, Roslind Russel in the dress at the end of White Christmas. The Chorus wanted NY to be represented, either by skyline or an iconic building, like the Empire State Building (which they lit in color for various Holidays and times of year).

We went with number two. The composition changed from the thumbnail, as such requests to add characters, like Sugar Plum Mary were made. I also moved characters around for better balance.

I wanted Mrs Claus to always be the focus of the image. She is in red, and all the other characters are in secondary colors, and placed around her.

The Empire State Building posed a bit of a challenge as it had to be interesting, without pulling focus. Hard to do when you also have to light it in Holiday colors.
