This is a human problem. Be aware.

I am a member of the Board of the Brown University African Students Association, acting as the RISD Liaison. This October, we are launching an online and campus-wide campaign aptly titled #EraseEbola that focuses on raising awareness of the Ebola Outbreak Crisis affecting Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

We have also noticed a trend of a derogatory association of African identity to Ebola, with actual cases, for example, of a student going to the Health Center to report symptoms of the mere flu and being asked of her connection to Ebola; a student who is from an African country that is no where near affected by the disease and who has been here in the States at school for the past year.

We are raising money here on our campuses to be given to the Liberian Association of Rhode Island, money that will be sent back to relief efforts on ground back in Liberia. We are also collecting more sanitary supplies for Health Organizations/Non-Profits on ground in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.

As for the online campaign, we are simply asking for your support in raising awareness, by changing your profile picture, tweeting #EraseEbola and in other forms as well. Ebola is a human concern and should not be considered an African one. Africans should not have to be identified with it. Jokes should not made because thousands have lost their lives already.
