SFGate Mobile App

Project Overview
The SFGate app is the result of a 2-week long class project. Our challenge was to increase reader interest and engagement in the San Francisco Chronicle and SFGate, a historically reputable publication struggling to stay relevant in the increasingly digital landscape. We created the app as part of a holistic solution, which also included branding and business strategy.

Collaborators: Kelly Chiu & Brenda Chen
Project Type: Native Mobile App
User Research
We utilized competitive analysis, surveys, and interviews to better understand user behavior as it relates to news consumption.
We identified millenials in the 18-34 age range as our target demographic, currently not being reached either the SFGate or SF Chronicle.
Surveys
We surveyed millenials to learn about their behavior, needs, and current practices regarding the news. Social media integration, uninterrupted news consumption, and accessibility while on-the-go were key.
Design Iteration
Using everything we'd learned from our research and comparative analysis, we began sketching an app that could provide a seamless news experience, with personalization and additional features facilitating mobile news consumption.

Low-fidelity prototyping in paper and POPapp allowed for rapid iteration and usability testing.
After learning from the first prototypes, we created a higher-fidelity iteration in proto.io for further testing.
Drawing from many different sources of inspiration, we integrated the best features and validated them with user testing.
