Tribal Jewellery,Dhenkanal,Orissa

The remote village in Dhenkanal,Orissa has a unique style of making tribal jewellery.
In stage 01, a brass wire of varying diameter is chosen to make the beads.
In stage 02- the heated brass wire is beaten on the anvil to flatten it from one side.
In stage 03 - the beaten wire is cut into pieces of 1 - 2 inches long.
each piece is then wound manually around a thick rod to ensure the bore of the bead.
Later each piece is beaten six times to get the hexagonal beads of varying bore dimensions.
The beads are then washed in zinc sulphide to bring out the shine of the brass beads.
Another technique involves cutting brass sheets into a desired shape and finishing the edges with brass thin wires wound around it.
This project was undertaken under Livingart LIfestyles Pvt. Ltd. at Pondicherry as part of the craft initiation project in Orissa. Anwesha Tribal Arts and Crafts helped us in reaching to the artisans and working with them to develop the jewellery range.
