Surveillance
səˈveɪl(ə)ns,-ˈveɪəns/
noun
close observation, especially of a suspected spy or criminal.
This was a Photography A2 exam piece that was created in 2013. It explores the use of surveillance in our everyday lives. These pictures were taken during a half an hour period on Cheltenham highstreet.
Using websites like PicMonkey each photo was manipulated to look like a strip of film with an 'Instagram" like filter.
The photos were then photocopied onto acetate and were merged with other images by hand to create new images. They were then put into slide mounts and photographed. Some were turned into negatives. This gave each photo a strange blotchy, blurry feel which looks as though someone is spying on victims from a distance. Almost like images from a CCTV camera.
My final piece consisted of merging both negagtive and coloured versions of the same image, targetting the back of a woman's head. Underneath are some of the slide mounts, labelled with specific times and dates. The frame is backless, allowing light to shine through the slide mounts. It was hung in the art gallery at Cleeve School in Cheltenham for their Alevel art show "Verve" in 2013.
