Concept
We want to depict a narrative in relation to the overwhelming effects and consequences generated by consumer culture. We found a viral infection to be a good metaphor to represent the intrusive and agressive approach advertising takes in order to get us to buy more and more things. Like a virus, consumerism has slowly eaten away at the moral fabric of our society and now threatens the ecological system from which it has developed. We wanted to begin our narrative with a calm serene feeling that quickly becomes overthrown by the “virus”. At this stage chaotic, inorganic, and industrialized imagery will begin to dominate the space surrounding the dancer. The dancer’s body language should reflect this change over time by becoming more “robotic” and rigid in contrast to the elegent “flowing” motions that are seen in the beginning.
Mood & Tone
We wanted a dark and forboding tone throughout the piece. The imagery should be dynamic and fast paced choreography in reaction to the motion graphics projected behinde the dancer. The peice should give a sense of a distopiyan look that leaves the audience with a sense of unease. We wanted the overall message of the narrative to evoke current feelings of our current zeitgeist, specifically refering to excessive comsumption, societal decay, and ecological collapse.
