I have been working on an actual oil paintings of these scenes this month but have been struggling with the interpretation in this style influenced by the Group of Seven painters. So, I created these full color digital studies as a guide and they are now evolving into a finished digital series in their own right. There is something so Michigan about these clouds that I was looking to capture.

There is something so Michigan about these clouds that I was looking to capture in this first color study. The horizontal rhythm and repetition of the clouds as they march across the sky evoke late summer and the arrival of cool clear weather.

The thundercloud is based on a photo I took in May looking down my driveway, but the drama in the sky needed a more worthy counterpart to become a painting so Sleeping Bear Dunes seemed like a poetic pairing. Its all about the the dance of shapes.
