Inner Horizons: A Journey of Self-Reflection (2022)

Inner Horizons (2022)
The global pandemic ushered in a wave of transformative changes, presenting us with both challenges and opportunities. Suddenly, our lives were inundated with uncertainty, unsettling and disorienting us. Amidst this upheaval, a period of profound introspection ensued. What once seemed like mundane chatter transformed into a profound internal dialogue, leading to a deeper understanding of ourselves and a newfound appreciation for life's simple pleasures.

This series delves into the themes of identity, community, and connectivity, reflecting upon my innermost thoughts and emotions during this period of isolation. It serves as a testament to how solitude, while isolating in nature, paradoxically became a space for profound introspection and exploration of intricate matters.

Created as a component of my IBDP curriculum, this series is a manifestation of my aspiration to ignite inspiration within others. Through sharing my innermost feelings and personal experiences, I aim to encourage individuals to embrace their unique emotional landscapes and undertake voyages of self-reflection. My hope is that these artworks will serve as catalysts for viewers to delve into the depths of their inner worlds, fostering profound connections with both themselves and the world that surrounds them.
Bane of existence
Mixed media (photography and digital manipulation)
59 x 89 cm
The inaugural artwork delves into the essence of our being, navigating themes of identity and self-exploration. Within this piece, my portrait takes center stage amidst a swirling aura of green light, evoking notions of human evolution. Symbolically, it illustrates the interconnectedness of simple organisms within a broader system, prompting intimate introspection regarding one's existence and purpose.
The red line of thoughts
Mixed media (acrylic and wool on canvas)
51 x 61 cm
This artwork explores how we might overcome isolation without losing ourselves by questioning our identity in connection to our surroundings. Being in a separated and delimited environment, such as an empty room with four walls and a mind full of thoughts, is quite similar to what one can experience while being isolated, both literally and metaphorically. While some may see it as a form of confinement, in which the room acts as a barrier to connecting with others and isolates them from the outside world, others may see it as a lesson in patience and resilience, a safe haven characterised by inner unity and strong bonds, in which the room provides limitless opportunities for self-discovery and creativity.
Unwrapping
Acrylic on canvas
51 x 76 cm
In this piece, the absence of a discernible facial features purposefully directs attention to the exploration of identity within an environmental context. While the human form is recognizable, it remains anonymous, emphasizing the universal nature of the struggle with identity. The unfolding figure suggests a vulnerability in revealing one's inner self, accentuated by the stark contrast between the green backdrop symbolizing the environment and the peach figure representing human skin. This interplay evokes feelings of anxiety and pressure commonly associated with exposing one's identity, heightening the emotional resonance of the artwork.
Together alone
Charcoal on paper
110 x 145 cm
Drawing from the ancient Chinese philosophy of yin yang, this artwork embraces the notion of dualism, where seemingly contrasting elements harmonize and intertwine. Like harmonious chords blending distinct notes, it conveys the understanding that opposing emotions can coexist. The piece symbolizes the acceptance of solitude and self-discovery, which in turn fosters a deeper connection with others. It captures the paradox of being together yet alone, and alone yet together simultaneously, illustrating the complex interplay between individuality and community.
All that is held inside
Digital Illustration
59 x 79 cm
This illustration depicts the connections between us and all the things that we hold inside. It alludes to the beauty I often find in loneliness I share with myself when I'm around people. To feel alone when you are surrounded by people can be a really hollowing feeling, but on days when I'm comfortable with that loneliness- a journey unfolds within itself. It's how when I'm travelling alone, solitude seeks me when I'm surrounded by people and in those moments, my loneliness feels like a living organ that shows a mirror to everyone around me. It's like we're all so lonely together, and we are learning to recognise it bit by bit. It represents the first step toward self-awareness and recognition of one's own characteristics, values and emotions.
A gradient of masked emotions
Mixed media (acrylic and plastic on canvas)
91.5 x 61 cm
A mask is frequently employed to conceal or suppress one's genuine feelings or emotions. This installation shows a transformation that occurred more as a chrysalis moment, a transitional change. The transition from repressing or "masking" emotions to sharpening and releasing them, a step toward self-growth shown by the process's several “gradients” or stages, also emphasised by the golden accents. The blue colour represents mental stability, while the broken masks are symbolic of the "breakthrough.”
Broken selves
Mixed Media (mirror pieces and paper on hdf)
58 x 78 cm
The final installation serves as a powerful symbol of our tendency to overlook alternative perspectives in life. Through the metaphor of a broken mirror, often associated with fractured self-image, we are reminded that even shattered pieces can be transformed into a beautiful mosaic, imperfect yet captivating in its new form. This mosaic represents rebirth and renewal, urging us to embrace change and leave behind our former selves. It serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of solitude for introspection, encouraging us to reflect on our emotions and experiences. As we gaze upon this mosaic, may it inspire us to see life through a fresh lens and embrace the beauty of imperfection.
