The Outlet is a fantastic collaborative project that brings together students from different disciplines to create a unique and expressive publication. This approach not only provides a platform for student writers and artists to showcase their talents but also collaboration and creativity.
Specifically, this encourages active collaboration between the Creative Writing and Graphic Design students. This collaborative effort results in a richer and more cohesive final product. Regular communication and feedback sessions between the two groups will ensure that the visual interpretations complement the written pieces effectively. We also considered establishing a thematic consistency throughout the publication. Whether it’s a visual theme that runs across the design elements or a thematic connection between the written pieces, this can contribute to a more unified and impactful journal. Together we created a cover concept the encompasses the idea of creativity, then create the supplementing pages within the magazine such as the table of contents, editor introduction, gallery pages, and more.
In a group with a few of my peers, we created the theme of "creativity is in our DNA". We wanted to combine science and biology into art. I decided to take elements such as DNA, neurons, and molecular structures, and then juxtaposed them with art utensils.
This cover and theme won the opportunity to be published as the BYUI Outlet Art and literary journal for the Fall 2023 publication. There were a total of four possible cover themes, and I am extremely grateful that mine was chosen for publication. I am forever thankful that I was able to learn how magazine are composed and the importance of print!
