252 Y.O. | Unreal Engine 5 Cinematic

THE STORY

A spaceship, having hit the asteroid zone, crashes and falls to a wild planet. The only surviving astronaut walks out onto the surface of the alien planet in search of salvation - a radio room unit that has fallen off. Slowly walking along a thicket of trees and swamp, the captain steps on the shell of a huge egg. It turns out that he has found himself on a land inhabited by dinosaurs.

PROCESS

I was completely fascinated by the process of making movies in Unreal Engine, because this is my first introduction to this program and the first cinematic made in it. Below I will share with you some fragments of my work.

BRIEF

In the first stage, the idea and the very scenario of the future cinematic was worked out. The task was to create something dark and mysterious. Then we selected references in terms of environment and color, made storyboards of each scene, and also thought over the future location of the cinematic.

Environment

As an environment it was thought to make something like a crater in the forest, which was left behind by a fallen ship. For this purpose ElectricDreamsEnv project with ready PCG for generation of forest and spots in it was well suited. All other objects were taken from free packs and placed on the location.

MOTION CAPTURE | ANIMATION

To create the facial animation, a character was created in Metahuman Creator. I recorded all the facial expressions on my phone and applied them to my character's face.
The character was based on the mash from Astronova's BigMediumSmall package. I retargeted the animation from the unique skeleton to the UE4 skeleton. The motion animation I picked up from the Mixamo package and blended it inside UE5 to create smooth movements.

SOUND

I recorded the speech for the video myself, and then used AI voiceover to translate that into the voices of the captain and dispatcher.
All soundtracks were added to CapCut because they are easier to edit there.

STILLS

This is my personal project, made for the purpose of learning a completely new 3D software for me.

Special thanks to Vasily Oleshko and Dmitry Plotnikov for their trust and support of this project, they helped with advice at important stages of the creation of Cinematic.
