Self-Critique
For this assignment I chose to design a poster inspired by the work of Saul Bass.  As simple as the idea of choosing some arbitrary subject for a fictitious lecture sounds, I had a bit of hard time with it.  With the anniversary of September 11 only a few short days ago, its passing conjured memories of frantic attempts to phone family members who I knew should have been in that building, or working in the area, and being a shoulder to cry on for friends doing the same.  That was day that changed the face of New York and our Nation forever.
In my first poster I chose to depict the Statue of Liberty in silhouette form.  Her placement allows for text in both the upper right and lower left quadrants, and offers a good bit of balance.  She is set on a muted orange background, surrounded by white text.  In keeping with the Saul Bass style, I utilized the Hitchcock font that is seen in much of his work.  There is very little I would change about this piece, other than perhaps the background color.  My second poster features the pre 9/11 skyline, with the towers partially intact.  The skyline and my hand are featured in silhouette form.  To bring forth the imagery of art after 9/11 I chose to play with the idea of the towers being erased by a pencil.  I again used the Hitchcock font for this poster, but chose a blue/green background instead.
