Wayfinding and Interpretation Design: Reimagining Oxford Street, Sydney
This project proposal is born from a brief that required signage, a wayfinding network, and an interpretation design element for Oxford Street, Sydney. Australian Photographer - William Yang is the corner stone for my project. His poetic relationship between text and form, and melancholy portraits are driving forces within my project. William Yang’s monologue “Sadness” which features images of his friend Allan: his decline and eventual death from AIDS inspired me to focus on the AIDS crisis. His series “Sadness” inspires my project significantly especially seen through my interpretation design elements (my series of portraits).

My interpretation design pays respect to Australians who have died from AIDS and tells their stories. I have featured 5 Australians in my design and share to the audience their successes, characteristics, and impact. Through this I hoped to remind the audience of these individual’s legacies and ensure that their story still gets told.
The Wayfinding Network:
I have utilised the rose throughout my project to symbolise: love, passion, romance, loss, condolences, and hope. With different evolutions, the rose communicates different stages in my way finding network and helps the audience effectively navigate my signage.

My colour palette is minimal allowing the style of William Yang to shine and create amelancholy tone. With only black and white, and red, the red creates visual impact.

For my interpretation design I exclusively used my own handwriting to truly convey WilliamYang’s Style. However, for my way finding elements I stuck to Rollerscript to make my signage more legible however still have the handwritten and organic style the William Yang uses. My project focuses on the AIDS crisis and remembers those who have died from AIDS. Therefore, my route starts at Taylor Square and guides the audience to The Albion Centre. The Albion Centre does free HIV testing and are significant advocates for HIV awareness and prevention.
