Lesson 3 - Tri Tone & B&W Conversions

Savannah: Tri-Tone

I took this photo of my niece in my parents’ backyard about 2 weeks ago. Nikon D700, AF-S Nikkor 28-300MM ED Lens. I couldn’t get her to smile while I had the camera, but I still think the photo turned out pretty great. I used a Nikon D700. I took the image into photoshop like the book instructed on p165. I used the gradient map option, then converted to grayscale, then used to settings (triton) that uses black and two grays, named “Bl WmGray 7 WmGray 2.” Converted the image back to RGB.

After I finished my tri-tone image, I took the exported jpg back into camera raw and added a vignette to make the subject stand out more. I also used the spot removal tool to take out a couple places where she had some food on her cheeks, and then finally I softened the skin with the target adjustment brush.
Landscape: B&W

I took this photo down in South Carolina on my Pop’s farm with a Nikon D700, AF-S Nikkor 28-300MM ED Lens. This is a field of Sorghum. The sky looked amazing with the clouds very heavy with rain, but the sun was shining. From the book, the author described a plugin which he used very often called Silver Efex Pro by Nik Software. I downloaded this and found that the effect “High Structure (harsh)” gave me the contrast that I was looking for (especially in the sky). Although the plugin gave me a quick output, it does not compare to the tri-tone portrait where I handpicked the settings. I wanted to use this as my 2nd example to show what the filter offered vs. what Photoshop itself offered (for me at least).

I had to add this last one. I shot this with the same camera and lens as the above photos. I added a little grain to the photo to make it rough, because I was going with sort of a spooky contrast with this picture of my shutters. We have a lot of light coming in and even with them closed, it still seems to leak in.

I used the Split Toning for this. With the colors Teal and tan which look really nice together.
