Happy International Day of Forests
Stepping away from science-based illustrations, I tried to illustrate the beauty and diversity of forests, taking inspiration from the trees of Central India.
Forests are biodiversity-rich habitats that support millions of species, and their ecosystem services sustain life on our planet. Despite their importance having been highlighted for decades through science and literature, they continue to be under threat.
Deforestation, land conversion, illegal logging, and forest fires are having a dire impact on forests globally. Species in the forests, individuals dependent on forests for livelihood and sustenance, and billions on the planet breathing clean air and using potable water all depend on healthy continuous forests.
In recent times, conservationists and scientists around the world have adopted several innovations to protect and monitor forests. The findings have helped assess deforestation, analyze forest ecosystems, counter forest fires and highlight the contribution of forests in mitigating climate change.
This forest day and for more to come, let us hope that forests remain intact, biodiverse, healthy and beautiful.
