KAYAK DESIGN
I worked on the design of a kayak for bird watching. The design opportunity and challenge lay in developing a kayak equipped with the necessary tools for this activity. Semantics and ergonomics were central focuses of the project. Understanding the activity, analyzing the environment in which it takes place, and discerning the users' basic needs were the catalysts for initiating the kayak design. Additionally, incorporating lightweight materials for ease of transportation and ensuring stability for steady observation were key considerations throughout the design process. Below is a glimpse into the design process
After comprehensively understanding and working on the aforementioned variables for several months, we achieved the final design of the kayak. Our proposal focused on two main aspects. Firstly, user comfort during the activity. We considered their comfort while paddling to the location and also how to make the activity more comfortable. Therefore, we opted for designing a seat with posture adjustment, made of elastic fabric, and equipped with a rail system at the bottom so that the user can lean forward and recline to observe and follow the bird's flight. Regarding semantics, we aimed to evoke bird nests. We achieved this objective through morphology and color. The materials used, ease of transport, paddle support, and the design of the logo and brand identity were also carefully considered and incorporated into the kayak design.
