commentary + collage
For this project i was tasked with making two analog collages that "comment" on a current political, social, economic or environmental concern. I chose two social concerns.

I found photos online and through magazines i had at home. For one of my posters there were images i chose to draw rather than print.

Some of the original photos can be found on my Dropmark.
Both of the posters side by side having to do with commentary on: mental health (left) and social media (right)
The focus of this collage was to represent the anxious feeling one can feel from comparing themselves to what they see on social media. People on social media dont display their full selves, they can put up "masks of themselves"(the black and white photo of a girl with holding up a mask). Social media in many ways can make one feel like : they aren't meeting unrealistic standards of where you should be in life or feeling like your'e missing out. The eyes are meant to represent the pressure to express yourself in an "acceptable way" on social media, how one can feel like they always have eyes on them.
The neglect of ones mental health can lead to the repression of emotion. Stigma surrounding battling a negative mental well-being can cause shame and guilt for feeling normal emotions such as sadness, fear and anger. I chose to highlight anger because I think that emotion is the most important to be regulated. Suppressing this feeling can cause it to intensify : outbreaks, isolation, and loneliness. The images on the right represent the feeling of anger, and they are fighting/angry at a brain: representing mental health( surrounded by flowers and a big lock). The big lock symbolizes the neglect/ shame and guilt that is felt towards mental health (the brain).
Here are both of my collages: the one on the left is my favorite.
