DARK ECHOES – Tutorial Storyboarding

I would like to take the opportunity in this classes Prototype project to develop the storyboard scenarios on how the game will teach the player how to play the game. As this is just a prototype, the ideas for the scenarios given are tentative and may change during actual capstone development.

These scenarios would take place in the cave-like section of the beginning of the game. Dim lighting would be used until bringing the player into the darkness.

Tutorial Scenario 1 – Movement
Crawling:
Set-up
: Player has fallen into the cave and landed beneath the rubble of the collapsed cave roof.
Learning: The player experiences crawling movement for the first time by moving in the natural direction of the tunnel out from the rubble.

Camera:
Set-up:
The player is given the key prompt to stand up, once standing a shimmering is seen to the left.
Learning: With the light presented to the left of the player’s focal view, they will naturally be drawn to turn to it and learn the control of the First-Person Camera.

Walking:
Set-up: The player (now facing the light) will be drawn to approach it.
Learning: Simply put, the player walks towards the light source.

Tutorial Scenario 2 - Interaction
 
Clapping:
Set-up:
The player (now at the light) sees a mosquito (or some sort of annoying flying insect) and be prompted to clap it.
Learning: Once the player claps, the echolocation effect will be reveal as the core navigation skill. They will see as small chasm with a worn pillar in front of them and a pile of rocks at their feet.

Throw (Rock):
Set-up:
The player picks up a rock and is prompted to throw it at the weak pillar to create a bridge.
Learning: The player learns about throwing to activate environmental events and echolocation as well. Crossing the bridge they face a scalable wall.
 
Climbing(Up):
Set-up:
The player faces the scalable wall and is prompt to climb it.
Learning: The player can climb a scalable wall when close to it, so the climb to the top and see another glowing point in the distance.

Throw(Glow-Shroom):
Set-up:
The player finds some Glow-Shrooms growing at the edge of a pit.
Learning: The player throws the Shroom and realizes the give light but no sound, and can see a rope leading down.

Climbing(Down):
Set-up:
The player is prompted to descend into the pit.
Learning: The player learns how to descend from high points. Discovers a dark room.

Dwellers:
Set-up:
The player would have to clap to reveal the room to discover a dweller is near.
Learning: The player would quickly have to run away and accidentally stumble down a slope. The player’s view would be looking up at the ledge where the dweller is stopped and see a bug fly by that catches the Dweller’s attention (foreshadowing that if you use these, they will lure dwellers)

At this point the player will have sufficient knowledge of the controls and skills they have. They will notice the area they are in seems to now be some sort of mine and the game would pick up from this point onward.

Dark Echoes Level 1-1 Beat by Beat

Section 1 – Hallway
- The game starts. The player is spawned into the world and hears a cave in sound. The can see the tunnel has cave in and they will have to go down the hall to continue. The player makes there way to the “exit” room where the player is prompted to jump onto the ladder to climb out, but the ground below them collapses and they fall into section 2.

Section 2 – The Pit
- In the pit there is a few mushrooms (static and usable) and the player gets to learn how to use them. Some room decals to be revealed by the mushrooms light. The room decals will reveal some of the mechanics of the game. The players is then lead to enter the crawl tunnel where the move through until falling into Section 3.
 
Section 3 – The Spiral Split Room
- The player is task with moving through the room and the spiral tower in the center. More decals can be in this area for the player to see and reveal a few more bits of the world. Ambient creatures can be seen moving around (snakes, rats, bats). The must jump up and around the platform to progress to the tunnel and Section 4.

Section 4 – The Skull Room
- The player stumbles into “The Skull Room” when a Dweller on the adjacent hallway roars, scaring the player and revealing the sound is light mechanic of the game to the player. The player is taught to use this clap ability (possibly have a Clap decal on the wall) the use this ability to navigate to the next crawl tunnel. Moving into Section 5

Section 5 – The Upper Edge
- The player is introduce to rocks and crystals for the first time. A crystal will be being dripped on showing it activate and the player will be directed to throw a rock at a crystal to break open the next tunnel wall. Moving through the tunnel, the player must hope across the platform on to the upper edge and proceed into Level 1-2.

OVERVIEW

Creepy Lil’ GIRL is a Horror Comedy game that serves as a tribute to all our favorite horror games and movies while  poking fun at the cliches and tropes that have made them great.
 
Envisioned as a 3D action-adventure with a mix of horror and comedy, it takes inspiration from games such as
Luigi’s Mansion (Level Design and Art Style),
Resident Evil (Atmosphere and Puzzles)
and
LEGO Harry Potter (Combat and Collectables)


Game Design: The focus is on trying to save the humans from the Paranormals.

Gameplay: Bash your enemies, use psychic abilities, solve puzzles, and sneak through corridors to try and spook the humans before the paranormals do!

Visuals: The style is a mix of traditional horror with cutesy charater designs and colors.

Story: Mara haunts her way through several
horror game inspired environments with oblivious “protagonists” trying to survive, and interacting with all kinds of monsters in search of friendship.

DEEP FREEZE [Tentative Title] Game Design Concept

Location: Antarctica
 
            - Earth’s southernmost continent and geographic location of the South Pole.
            - Covered in ice nearly 1 mile (1.6km) thick.
            - Coldest, Driest, and Windiest continent, with the highest average elevation.
            - Considered a desert, it receives an annual precipitation of 8” along the coast
- No permanent Human residents but up to 5000 people reside per year at   
  research stations located across the continent.
- Home to Penguins, Seals, and cold-dwelling mirco-organisms.
- Marie Byrd Land is the only unclaimed portion of Antarctica by any nation.
- Operation Deep Freeze is the general term for supply runs conducted by the
   U.S since 1955

Story
 
Coinciding with a current Operation Deep Freeze mission being conducted by the U.S Military, a lone scientist has been dispatched to ______________ station to conduct secret research into making Marie Byrd Land into a habitable US state. After several days of expedition, a fatally wounded soldier makes an unexpected return to the station, his dying words being “They’re here…they’ve always been here…”.

            The soldier’s radio bursts on with a staticy transmission “Th…Lieuten… Cullen Matthews… Private Green… Green come in?” picking up the radio the main character speaks “This is Dr. Eisen Walsh, Private Green is…he didn’t make it…”, “ Walsh…we are…help… co-ordinate… lat… 4…long… flares fired…” the radio signal goes dead and the player sees out across the landscape a flare shoot into the sky.

            As the camera shifts back down, Private Green’s body is missing and the view sees a figure walking towards the location of the flare. The player is thrust into pursuit. The player is then given control but must follow the figure into the fog through a slightly elevating mountain pass.
 
Leading into a wide open snow field, eerie sound effects start to echo as the player continues to follow the figure in the distance until the player discovers a flare lying in the snow outside a crumbling facility. The doors fling open in the wind, enticing the player to enter.

            The player enters the facility finding a stairwell down to the bottom floor at the bottom of an ice chasm. The figure is no longer seen but echoes of a faint voice trail through the pathway leading to a cave entrance.

            Entering the cave, more eerie sound effects echo through the tunnel. As the player moves up the passage another flare bounces down through the cave. The player then leaves the cave to enter the higher valley.
 
The higher valley features some debris and faint blood trails, that lead out to the final open range. The open range is littered with ruins, skeleltons, blood splatter, and few traces of wildlife. In the distance a team of soldiers can be seen and the figure seen running towards them.
 
The figure eventually stops as another flare lights up the sky. The player goes up to examine. The figure twitches, screams, and shatters. The other soldiers begin to scream and freeze, some are attacked by invisible entities, and the Lieutenant runs towards a temple in the icey wall of the range. A heavy storm begins to kick up
as the player is forced to run as well, and ice spires begin to jut up through the ground, making return impossible…

Background History: Kalyn Graham is the daughter of Lieutenant Bruce Graham and was born into a loving, healthy Suburban household. She had a very nurturing upbringing and her father’s morals had rubbed off on her at a very young age. She’s always felt very attached to her dad and simply wanted to impress him and gain the his approval. Her transition through school was filled with friends, games, social events. Now, as she is about to become a police officer, she is started to see the world more clearly, and is uncertain whether she or not she has what it takes to make a difference. A huge opportunity is presented to her when she’s invited to join an elite task force responsible for crime scenes involving the super hero known as Extraordinaire.   
Relation to Other Significant Characters: New officer to serve the city. Part of the task force involved in events surrounding Extraordinaire.

Physical Description: Slightly Slender Build (less developed curves) Medium length straight, deep red hair, not overly feminine.

Gameplay Purposes: Players will get to know and feel for the main character and her journey into an unfamiliar threat (Extraordinaire’s Mission) and prompt very moralistic choices. The player will have to work through the events tied into the antagonists quest for change, and lines may blur on who these characters are to each other.

Background History: Eisen Matthews was born into a dysfunctional, lower-income household of a neglectful father, an un-nurturing mother, and a brightly optimistic older brother. At an early age, Eisen started to notice super natural abilities to control the world around him, something he was able to share with his brother. One troubling night, Eisen’s father walked out on the family while the brothers were playing in the streets when a speeding bank robber came barreling down the street. In order to save his brother from getting hit by the car Eisen used his power to force the car off the road, but when it slammed into fire hydrant, the cap shot off and right into Eisen’s brother’s chest, killing him instantly, his mother just looked down on him turn her head and cried. The events of that day have haunted Eisen ever since, and when he had finally honed his powers (in private) he decided to become a super hero. While he spent many years protecting the civilians of the city, whenever he was unable to fully satisfy their needs, the criticisms and expectations began to eat away at his conscious, turning his views on the world into a problem that he feels that only he can resolve…

Alters the way npc’s view him, their surroundings and the main character.

He would steal from the rich and the wicked.
