"Mary Cassatt at Work" Exhibition - Custom designed modular benches

The round benches were inspired by park benches around the base of trees, or in this case columns as shown in the plan below. These round benches were installed in a large open portion of the gallery to evoke ideas of the public square or plaza. The modular benches can also be assembled in a serpentine shape, a nod to the Victorian conversation sofa. This design was a way to engage the architecture of the gallery in new ways, draw inspiration from Mary Cassatt's work and time, support gallery sketching activities, all while keeping cost of labor and materials in mind.
