Impossible Composite

Assignment Instructions:
After the conception of ideas on paper, students will research and document their legal right to use compatible imagery to create a digital composite that positions a subject in a new environment using nondestructive image editing workflows. Correction of the light source, film grain, focus, edge sharpness, blur, color cast, and atmospheric conditions will be applied.

Part 1: Mind Map

Step 2: Stock Photos

With the usage rights element of the assignment, I used Adobe stock images to ensure Creative Commons rights. This photo was the inspiration for my composite.
Step 3: Final Project
My Experience: Once I found the stock photo for the starry sky in the canyon, I ditched the plans in the mind map and saw the potential for an underwater/river scene. The viewpoint of looking up at the sky doubles as looking at the surface of the water from the ocean floor. To follow the atmospheric conditions, all added elements need to be seen from the "underbelly" side. The sea animals, plane, and diver, also needed to match the darkness of a nighttime deep-sea trench, so there are added shadows and color matching. I added the plane so the concept of the sky wasn't lost.

I like my concept for this photo but wish my skills were developed enough to have the added elements darker without losing detail.
