Library in the Field of Chrysanthemums / ATELIER XI
Description sent by the project team. The library is situated in a vast chrysanthemum plantation at the foot of Yuntai Mountain. The architect was invited to design a multifunctional building for community use. It accommodates chrysanthemum tea tasting, book reading, small-scale musical performances, agricultural education workshops and tool storage.
Architecture as a Village. To avoid imposing a single large volume on the flower field landscape, the architect divided the functions into five small, dispersed cubic elements. These interconnected yet relatively private cubic volumes not only avoid interference between different functions, but also offer unobstructed views of the landscape in various directions while hosting different types of activities. The architecture, made up of distinct individual units, resembles a miniature village. The exterior of each unit is inspired by the silhouette of local homes, featuring pitched roofs in the traditional architectural style found in the region. With soaring roofs oriented in multiple directions, the library fully captures the enchanting views from all sides of the flower field.
The architecture and the environment complement each other: the spatial configuration of the volume serves as a container for observing the countryside, framing a picturesque view through the windows. At the same time, the sculptural form becomes an artistic backdrop for the vibrant flowers.
Time Scale. The growth cycles of surrounding crops create an ever-changing timescale with alternating seasons. The five units facing different directions capture the dynamic presentation of light throughout the day, transforming the architectural space on a scale that traces the nuances of time across the vastness of the wild.
Architecture as Interconnected Voids. The exterior is covered with white paint, forming a minimalist and sculptural volume. The interior is made up of a series of interconnected curved spaces in wood. Five curved wooden walls in each unit define the areas between public and private uses. These walls are clad in locally sourced wood, creating a warm color and texture that resonates with the delicate qualities of chrysanthemums. The overall architecture is defined by local conditions. Separate but connected, the spaces provide flexibility for individual appropriations or group meetings.
The tension between the smooth interior and its angled exterior brings a distinct quality that changes from day to night: in daylight, the white walls evoke the image of a northern village. While at night, the silhouette dissolves into darkness, emphasizing the internal space and offering a dreamlike warmth.
