ARTS 532: Illustrated Letterform

The illustration conceptually represents the letterform of “P” in the form of a piano. From above, the lid of a piano, specifically a grand or baby grand, looks much like a “P” as the piano lid mimics the curves of the bowl of the capital “P”, and the keyboard of the piano abstractly looks like the stem of the “P”. The curve of the top of the piano soundboard area and lid reaches closer to the bottom of the keyboard portion of the piano. For the purposes of the illustration, the curve was pulled closer up to match the intersection of the bowl of the “P” to the stroke of the “P”. The counter of the “P” was replicated using shading and gradation, through the use of Gaussian blur and the blending mode of multiply, on the top of the opened lid of the piano. A piano bench was added to the side of the “P”, but in a lighter shade, so it would not take away from representing the letterform “P”.
