Conceptual Book Cover- Fahrenheit 451

I was requested to design three book covers for a classic novel that effectively communicates the author's message or point of view behind the narrative. Using these three methods. Typography, handmade (utilizing physical materials), and my own personal choice or style. The book I chose was Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury. I utilized this novel's context and elements to employ one of the seven creative strategies I learned in the beginning of the semester.
Book Cover 1: Typography Concept
For my typographic design I wanted to create a new type face only using elements from my chosen novel. I used design principle combination to combine typography with physical matches. I gravitated to the idea that like a physical match it "could" be burned, if desired. Much like the dilemma our main character faces in the book.

Book Cover 2: Handmade Concept
For my handmade cover I used photography and illustration to showcase my design principle Isolation. In the novel our main character faces isolation when he comes to the understanding that he is different from the society around him. I liked the concept of the reading match being lit because of this quote from the book "Cram them full of noncombustible data". Exposing the idea that those who do have ideas are dangerous people and those who don't are enslaved to oppression.

Book Cover 3: Designers Choice Concept
For my designers choice cover I used design principle change of environment to really show how unusual it is to see a fireman start a fire, instead of putting it out. It conveys the message of the story as well as the idea of the book. The idea that Fahrenheit 451 all started from an unusual character with "out of place" ideas.
