Censor Copyright is a campaign to protect humanity’s right to free expression by encouraging free culture practices and copyright law reform.
Inspired by remix culture, I wanted to create and brand a campaign dedicated to raising awareness of current, monopolistic copyright laws that often contradict our First Amendment rights—“Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech…”—with intellectual property laws that often do, in fact, step on our freedom of speech. Copyright law should encourage creative expression, not proactively censor it.
To spread awareness, I propose a tongue-in-cheek web browser extension that replaces all images not found to be licensed under Creative Commons or in the public domain with a copyright symbol, calling attention to the vast majority of content on the web that is legally restricted from societal use.
