The Kurdistan Center for International Law (KCIL) organized a comprehensive two-day introductory workshop, exclusively designed for commanders and officers of the Ministry of Peshmerga. the project is supported by ZIVIK FUNDING PROGRAMME via German Federal Foreign Office's funds, the workshop aimed to enhance participants' understanding of international law and its relevance to their roles in maintaining security and upholding justice.

The Kurdistan Center for International Law (KCIL) which is supported by ZIVIK FUNDING PROGRAMME German Federal Foreign Office's funds. successfully conducted a two-day introductory workshop on international law for judges, prosecutors, and judicial investigators in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, During the workshop, participants raised thought-provoking questions and engaged in discussions on various aspects of international criminal law. Some key inquiries included jurisdictional limitations when prosecuting international cases or applying hybrid laws to cases in Iraq, the potential escape routes for criminals seeking to avoid impunity and punishment, the procedures of prosecution for domestic crimes that can turn into international crimes, and the differentiation between motive and intentions of criminals.

The KCIL in partnership with ZIVIK FUNDING PROGRAMME via the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concluded a highly successful week-long summer school on international criminal law. The program brought together law students from ten various institutions with the aim of enhancing their understanding of international criminal law and its intersection with Kurdistan national legal system, The summer school provided an intensive learning experience, featuring a series of engaging lectures and discussions by renowned experts in the field.

KCIL in collaboration with ZIVIK FUNDING PROGRAMME via the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized a workshop on international crimes for judges, prosecutors, judicial investigators, and senior legal advisors at the Kurdistan Parliament in Erbil city, This workshop ran in parallel with an open discussion on the draft bill titled “Combatting and Punishment of International Crimes.”The main objective of this workshop was to facilitate a productive discussion about the importance of introducing and domesticating international criminal law in the KRI.

The KCIL initiated a project for "Advancing Media Freedom", it focused on safeguarding journalists' rights in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. This involved creating a manual on freedom of expression, with insights from domestic and international law. The training sessions held in Sulaymaniyah for a group of lawyers were aimed at enhancing the legal understanding of lawyers and journalists concerning media laws, possible access to vital information in their practical careers, preventing the misuse of communication tools, and maintaining ethical standards in media coverage of events within the media outlets, The initiative extended beyond legal aspects, emphasizing the ethical dimensions of media law. Lawyers were encouraged to consider the social impact of their work, viewing the protection of media freedom as crucial for democratic societies. This effort represents a significant stride in fostering a supportive environment for journalists and advancing freedom of expression.

The Kurdistan Center for International Law (KCI) is working to protect the rights of journalists in the Kurdistan Region by preparing a program on freedom of expression in accordance with domestic and international laws and training lawyers and journalists in accordance with the legal guidelines, During the project, a course on the right to freedom of expression according to domestic and international laws was conducted for 15 journalists on December 8, 2023 in sulaymaniyah province, The aim of the course was to raise the awareness of journalists about the freedom of the press and their access to necessary information and the rights provided by domestic and international laws for journalists.

The project is implemented by the Kurdistan Center for International Law and sponsored by the Federal Consulate of Germany.

Kurdistan Center for International Law (KCI) organized two courses on the right to freedom of expression under domestic and international law for lawyers and journalists on 21 and 22 December 2023 in Erbil province, The aim of the course was to raise the awareness of lawyers and journalists about freedom of the press and access to necessary information and the rights provided by domestic and international laws for journalists.

After a year of dedicated efforts, the Kurdistan Center for International Law (KCIL) proudly presents the outcomes achieved during the second phase of the "Towards Domesticating International Criminal Law in Kurdistan" project.
