Bring Awareness to Conflict Diamonds
The social cause is to slow the trade of 'Conflict Diamonds.' The poster creates awareness of the atrocities that can occur while civilians are mining diamonds. Buyers will be encouraged to be cautious and question that no lives have been harmed over the diamonds they are purchasing.
When a person buys a diamond they risk supporting violence and human suffering in one of three African countries. Sierra Leone, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The civilians that find these 'Blood Diamonds' are paid very little for them. Insurgents take the valuable stones and trade them for weapons, which are used against villagers. It is a vicious cycle. The terrorists will easily amputate hands, feet, lips, ears and noses to prove their authority. Children in the villages are kidnapped, given drugs, handed weapons and forced to join the rebel groups. Western society is supporting this chaos when they buy these diamonds. Much of society is unaware of the horrific mining situations in Africa.
In order to prevent the flow of 'Conflict Diamonds' an awareness must be sent into the world to let society understand where these precious stones come from. An international certification organization was created in the year 2000 called 'The Kimberley Process.' The KPCS has developed a set of minimum requirements that each participant must meet. The purpose of the poster is to let diamond buyers know that 'Conflict Diamonds' are an issue and to make sure that the diamonds they come accross are supported by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS).
The poster is designed to enhance an understanding of 'Conflict Diamonds' as well as to remind people that are already familiar with the topic that sometimes diamonds can cost more than paper money, they may cost a human life.
The tone of the poster is using a familiar situation, from jewelry advertisements in the past to catch the viewers attention and then adding shock to leave a lingering idea in the viewers memory.
