Throughout the semester, we where assigned to collect as many different examples of printed typography as possible (letterforms that appear on packaging, on the pages of newspapers or other periodicals; ticket stubs, receipts, stamps, stickers, takeout menus, junk mail, circulars, etc.) Seek these items wherever you happen to be.
I will be uploading weekly collages to this forum!
14th week (final): For my final collage I used an x-acto knife, scissors, a black pastel color, and a micron pen. I wanted to add a lot of texture to my design so I crumbled up an old grocery receipt and when I glued it it created this wrinkled lines that when I added the black pastel on top I believe that it accentuated it more. That being said, I am very proud of all of my collages from this semester! I leaned a lot and was able to develop intriguing and eye-catching collages by the end of it.
13th week: For this week's collage I simply used scissors and glue to put this collage together. I was inspired by Niklaus Troxler. I combined different languages together from an instruction book I found laying around my apartment. I believe that by combining different languages and their own alphabet it ended up adding more texture.
12th week: For this week's collage I used a many receipts I found laying around my house, and some left over magazine scraps and still had. I found inspiration by an artist called Andrea Sigmann and her work called "Consumerism Through Collage", you can actually find a lot of her work here on Behance. I think you can tell a lot about a person through their receipts and the stuff they buy. I believe that is what she was trying to convey through her collages. I used scissors, glue, and a black pastel color.
11th week: For this week collage I only used glue. I wanted to give myself a small challenge of only using scraps that I had already cut before but decided not to use because of whatever reason (didn't go well with the collage, etc). I layered them all on top of each other to cover up whatever imperfection I didn't like that made me not want to use it in the first place. Even though it's not my favorite collage I enjoyed the challenge and I am satisfied of how it came out. Also! Less trash to through away! :)
10th week: For this week's collage I used pastels and glue. I didn't use any scissors nor an x-acto knife because I wanted to challenge myself in only using my hands to create the precise cuts that I was aiming for. Even though this collage isn't my favorite one it's definitely one that was a challenge to create and for that I am satisfied in how it came out.
9th Week: For this week's collage I used pastel colors, scissors, and glue. I wanted to create a grunge rusty look by adding different orange-tone pastel colors together and mixing them with my hand. I really like how this piece came out!
8th week: I bought pastels when I saw one of my classmates incorporate them to his collage and I really wanted to try them out . The colors blended so well with one stroke of my finger and it was exactly what I was looking for this whole time when I tried to add color to my collages. I used matte gloss medium to transfer ink from one magazine to my paper. I also used glue and an x-acto knife.
7th week: This week, I aimed to incorporate color and scribbles into my collage work. I've always felt a bit uneasy about integrating random shapes into my designs, as they seem permanent. Even though mistakes are part of the process, I strive for a specific aesthetic. If I don't achieve it, I find myself repeatedly adding more and more scribbles, which can become exhausting. However, I'm determined to embrace this element because I adore the chaotic energy it brings. For this collage, I utilized glue, an x-acto knife, pens, watercolor pens, and magazines.
6th Week: This week, I experimented with watercolor paper, using Matte Medium and Acrylic Spray Paint Crystal Clear to transfer ink from a magazine onto the paper. This technique aimed to impart an aged contrast to the word "Young." I incorporated red lines to enhance the overall vintage, rusty effect.
5th Week: For this week's collage I wanted to do a more classy approach to collage. I used scissors, x-acto knife, a cutting mat, and glue to design this.
4th week: For this week's collage I was inspired by images of transparent typography going through images. I think it's a fascinating idea and I was dying to try it! I used an x-acto knife, a cutting mat, and glue.
3rd week: For this week's collage I used the leftover magazines that I got from B&N + I printed out the word "neigh" many times for another typography project and I thought it to be appropriate to use it for this week's collage.
2nd week: For this collage I really wanted to experiment since I feel like I' haven't been playing with my previous designs enough. I drew inspirations from abstract collages that I found such as Colin Talcroft abstract monotype collage and some of Peter Strnad. I absolutely believe that I could work more on my hierarchy but I feel like this could be the start of my journey to finding my graphic design personality and that, to me at least, is very exciting!
1st week: I drew inspiration from Chris Ashworth, particularly his use of worn-out typography. Eager to emulate his style while including my own creativity, I crafted this collage using labels from shipped boxes to my new apartment (which, needless to say, were numerous), prescription drug packaging, its accompanying warning label, and red paper taken from magazines delivered to my home. The intent behind this collage was to capture elements of my current surroundings—a symbolic representation of embarking on a new chapter in a new apartment with a new prescription. I intentionally limited myself to working only with materials available to me, refraining from digging through trash, and take pride in the simplicity and authenticity of the final piece.
