I discovered Chip Foose's work while watching him sketch on an old Discovery Channel show called Rides. I was captivated by the skills of this car designer, a professional who so thoroughly masters the art of his craft that it appears effortless.
Throughout the shows, my admiration grew for his creativity and ingenuity in finding design solutions for various existing vehicles. His suggestions transformed cars in an almost magical way.
When I learned he was coming to Brazil in 2006, I quickly created a spontaneous caricature and produced a T-shirt. I presented it live during his appearance at the Discovery Channel booth at the Xtreme Motor Sport event. He loved the personalized gift so much that he even drew on the back of my son's shirt. The guy was incredibly friendly.
Well, the following year, I learned that he would return, and this time, I decided to create a more detailed piece of art. I chose to focus on the incredible Camaro that he had personalized, and from the caricature of the vehicle, I proceeded to develop the caricature of Mr. Foose. The initial idea was to concentrate solely on the car, but I decided to include his caricature upon learning that he had designed a simple car for the Soap Box Race, a famous event with homemade cars crafted by their own drivers.
The playful twist was to include, under the designer's arm, his sketches for a Soap Box car. It was a fun piece of art, originally intended to grace a T-shirt. However, I thought it would be interesting to include another piece with the caricature of his great supporter in his career, his father, Sam Foose, along with caricatures of his automotive creations.
Well, with the artworks ready and the T-shirt produced, featuring both illustrations printed, there was only one thing left to do: deliver the gift to the designer, who was once again at the Discovery Channel booth during the Xtreme Motor Sport 2007.
