Consumption Control - A Music Video

Consumption Control
Bachelor's project
Since I majored in Media Design and took a Fashion Diploma, I wanted to design a Bachelor's projecting merging both fields. I've designed a music video, because I like to express my ideas through visual communication, and felt that a music video would allow me to do that freely and creatively. I've also taken a sustainable approach to my project, to compel myself to be more mindful about the environment and take steps to consume less.

Consumption Control has a double meaning, a mental and a physical kind of consumption. The mental kind is the topic of my project, which is emotional consumption and the physical kind is about clothing wastes and how I incorporated sustainability in the costume design.
We are bound by the emotions we feel, when they consume us. Upon emotional consumption, we are no longer in control of our thoughts, reactions and attitude towards others. Emotion in my project is depicted as a puppeteer, that wants to control its puppet. The strings are the symbol of power and control and it's up to the puppet to grab ahold of it, if it no longer wants to be controlled.
Costume Design
My research question was: How does fashion communicate with the audience through media? So costume design was crucial to communicate who the characters are. Since it's a music video and more on the abstract side, I wanted to implement my fashion design knowledge to help portray the characters.

I was inspired by a design I've illustrated before and thought that a hooded gown would be the surrealistic approach I wanted to portray the puppeteer character. The puppeteer is based on emotion, it's not human, so I had to design the dress in a way that's faceless and shapeless.
Upon further research, I figured I could implement the puppetry aspect to the design as well and since it's a theatrical form of art, I applied the drapery technique to mimic the theater's curtains. I also picked the color red, as it's typically the color of the curtains and is also an intense, emotionally evoking color , which aligns with the concept. The hood and the drapery of the puppeteer's dress gave the feeling that someone behind the curtains is controlling the puppet.
As for the puppet's costume, I wanted it to be white, to signify the naivety of a human under the influence of their emotions. I up cycled a dress I had owned and reused a top I had made, but styled it differently to give an innocent, enchanting look.
I implemented these 4 kinds of fashion sustainability in the making of the costumes.
To take sustainability a step further, I applied green film production methods to be less wasteful and encourage crew members to follow suit.
