Peripheries of the Centre (Master Thesis)

The project “Peripheries of the Centre” investigates ways of motivating Lisbon residents to return to the city center and sustainably reconnect with the historical places that have been overpopulated by tourists, while still acknowledging the socio-economic relevance of tourism. It identifies the popular traditions of Lisbon, examines the impact of the mass tourism, and explores city branding strategies to appeal to the sense of identity and belonging. The project proposes a non-touristic guidebook that builds on the concept of ‘contrasts’ to raise awareness about calm places, with cultural and historical value, located nearby crowded touristic attractions. The visual narrative is combined with extracts from the Portuguese literature that point out an alternative city to revive urban memory.
