Landscape Architecture & Horticulture Building

For comprehensive studio this semester my partner and I’s goal was to design a building for Temple University's new Landscape Architecture and Horticulture department.

One of the main goals of the project was to respect the scale of the surrounding residential neighborhood and maximize the limited space available. The design achieved these goals by employing a dynamic modular form, where outdoor areas are maximized to provide private terraces for each classroom and studio, allowing for planting and the display of work.
A key consideration in the design process was to provide all interior spaces with ample natural daylight and ventilation, regardless of their hierarchy. Wooden horizontal and vertical louvers were added to eliminate glare in the interiors and reduce energy consumption.
The greenhouse is placed at the top of the building becoming an interesting focal point. The greenhouse is specifically designed to accommodate plants of varying heights and sizes, ensuring optimal conditions for cultivation.
The dominant corner entrance on Diamond St and 13th guides visitors into the redesigned courtyard of the Tyler School of Art. Beyond aesthetics, this functional space serves as a hub for gatherings, events, and socializing, transforming it into a purposeful destination.
Moreover, a marketplace on Diamond Street was incorporated into the design, serving to revive the area's commercial history while fostering engagement with the surrounding neighborhood. This marketplace not only allows students to display their work but also helps to keep the area vibrant and active, contributing to a safer environment overall.
By integrating pops of color in the project, the building's design creates an animated and interconnected space that harmonizes with the adjacent Tyler School of Art. The result is a cohesive and inviting environment that prioritizes community engagement, while ensuring functionality and promoting a sense of belonging.
